It’s not just a matter of what you consume pre- and post ride. In general you have to be careful what you eat. I started eating “healthy” a year ago and made good progress. I reduced sugar intake, avoided fizzy drinks, bread, etc. as much as possible. The perfect balance is said to be 15% protein, 55% carbs and the remaining bit fat (avoid saturated fat!). Obviously as athlete you may need more protein – as it has been said above. However, what happened to me is that I often felt tired and exhausted blaming it on the lack of sugar as I completely changed my food intake…. and perhaps too much protein. What actually happened (and I never noticed before) – my body is intolerant to glucose. Novak Djokovic lost major tournaments as he felt exhausted and once he cut on products that contain glucose he had the endurance to become #1. Not that I am suggesting I will ever cycle as he plays tennis. But it helps a lot !! Quiet a few people are intolerant to glucose, so thought I share this.
